Private veterinarian reporting of equine diseases and syndromes of importance

Disease reporting is becoming more and more important globally with transparency in disease incidence playing an important role in the assessment of countries, their veterinary services and their ability to trade in animals and animal products. South Africa subscribes to the international reporting of disease to the International Collating Centre and private equine veterinarian disease reporting forms the backbone of this reporting. Furthermore, if diseases and disease syndromes are reported on or in near real time it provides a valuable data source for veterinarians whose work environments overlap to assess cases presented to them.

SAEVA has established a web-based system where basic disease incidence can be captured – it utilises the most basic of data capture and disease events can be logged in a matter of seconds. It is then immediately available online to other registered users. Private veterinarians and their staff can, therefore, provide data which does not compromise their clients or themselves while still being valuable. We encourage both SAEVA and non-SAEVA veterinarians and para-veterinarians to register on the system and report on equine diseases of veterinary importance.
