26/o8/1938 – 14.08.2019.
John was born on the 26th of August, 1938 in Salisbury now Harare.
Also in the fifth year at school, the secret which John had kept all those
years was discovered that one of his names was “Pomfret.” Thereafter he was called “Pomf” – no other name was considered as better suiting him. “He was loved by all. His humour, ever joking occasioned at times
by his lusty singing, provided such company.”
John studied at Onderstepoort then moved to Alberta in Canada where he worked in a large animal practice for 2 years. On returning from Canada John started his own small and large practice in Marandellas, Zimbabwe. In 1978 he moved to Hillcrest Kwa Zulu Natal and joined Baker and Du Preez’s practice in Summerveld.
John was made an Honorary Life Member of the Kloof and Highway SPCA and in 1987 became a member of the Kloof Lions Club. He loved to sing and was a member with Maggie of the Hillcrest Holy Trinity Church choir.
John had a sincere appreciation for all people regardless of how long he knew them and gave of himself not because he had to but because he wanted to. He cared about other people before he cared for himself”
For the last couple of years, he showed great courage and resilience throughout his illness. He lived life
to the fullest and loved to smile, laugh, and reminisce.
He leaves behind his wife Maggie and children Jacquie, Mandy, Cindy, Bruce, Kate and stepchildren Suzanne and Graeme 8 grandchildren and 5 step-grandchildren
Dr. John’s passing has been a loss to his family and his colleagues who fortunate to have known him. Dr. John’s passion for his chosen profession never waned.
The animals he was asked to attend to benefitted from his compassion and dedication. His clients loved and respected Dr. John.
